Kim Kardashian is coming under fire from some online after her daughter North West seemingly wore Michael Jackson's genuine hat from the "Smooth Criminal" music video.
It's the second piece of pop culture controversy involving Kardashian after she was accused of ruining Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress after wearing it at the 2022 Met Gala.
A series of photographs posted on social media shows Kardashian's family showing off their Halloween costumes, but the outfit worn by North caught the attention of many.
On Saturday, October 29, as people were celebrating the upcoming spooky holiday, pictures posted online showed North was wearing an expensive gift given to her years ago.
Kim and North's shared TikTok account showed North dressing up as Jackson wearing the iconic white fedora and a black leather jacket. Two videos of North wearing the jacket and hat were posted, with one of them getting 12.3 million views.
However, fans of the reality stars dug up old Instagram stories of Kardashian's showing that the hat and jacket were real pieces of memorabilia bought in 2019.
For Christmas in 2019, Kardashian gave the then 6-year-old North the leather jacket Jackson wore to Elizabeth Taylor's 65th birthday party.
On Instagram she shared a video of the jacket and said: "North is a really big Michael Jackson fan and we knew she would love this. We won this on an auction for Northie for Christmas."
Page Six reported that Kardashian paid $65,625 at an auction, and would have the jacket lengthened to fit North as she grows.
"Along with jacket, North also got Michael's 'Smooth Criminal' hat. It still has his make up on it," Kardashian also wrote in another Instagram story. The notable make-up stain on the white hat is visible on the same hat that North wore in the recent TikTok videos.
"The fact that Michael's kids couldn't get this stuff and now have to watch the Kardashians treat their deceased father's historical clothing as party costume," Twitter user @enscino wrote online. Their take on the situation got 117,000 likes and tens of thousands of comments and retweets.
"Kim is obsessed with ingratiating herself into other people's legacies," @LikeaStar1032 wrote, sharing images of the TikTok video and the previous picture of the hat on Kardashian's Instagram.
The images were also shared over on Reddit where people also expressed their disbelief at the situation. "To be born into this type of wealth and affluence is insane," one user wrote, while another commented: "If I were 10 years old and entrusted with this priceless hat, I would lose it immediately."
