The boyfriend of a US swimming star found dead at their home on the Virgin Islands was jailed for ten years after a violent brawl in 2007, according to sources.
Jamie Cail, 42, was found unresponsive on February 21 at around midnight, with police then launching a criminal investigation.
Sources confirmed to Fox News Digital her boyfriend is 'bad boy' Kamal Thomas, 34, who discovered her at their home after returning home from the pub.
Thomas spent years fighting against the serious charges after he and three other men attacked James Cockayne, 21, hours before his death.
Cockayne's mother told DailyMail.com that Thomas was 'bad to the bone', with the felon accused of attacking Cockayne, a tourist on the island in 2007.

Thomas was initially convicted of two counts of third-degree assault and associated weapons charges.
But his conviction was quashed in 2008 after it was revealed that prosecutors failed to turn over a key piece of evidence for the trial.
Thomas was then convicted of third-degree assault, simple assault, weapons charges and threatening a witness following a second trial in 2010.
He was sentenced to ten years in jail, with two years suspended, and was handed a fine of $11,750 for all of the charges, according to the V.I. Daily News.
Cockayne's family said it is 'very difficult' to get justice in the Virgin Islands. His mother, Jean Cockayne, hired private investigators to gather information about her son's death – and handed it over to cops while making it public.
She was first told of Cail's death by a resident of St John who called to tell her about the police investigation.
Speaking to DailyMail.com she said: 'They are all keeping quiet because they are afraid of the repercussions if they get involved.

'The police aren't going to do anything, everyone knows everyone on the island or they are related. No one wants to lose their tourist dollars.
'Our case was very very complicated, and the VIPD are just as inept now as they were then. People who go to the island just think it won't happen to them, but it can.
'Every six months me and my family were dragged down to the islands to attend a parole hearing, it's ridiculous.
'How can you kill someone and have a parole hearing every six months after only a few years.
'It is very much cowboy country, it's a horrible situation. I feel terrible for her family.
'Apparently she was an extraordinary young woman, but she made some bad choices with men.
'But this guy is just bad to the bone. He is an evil person. He is a danger and if they don't stop him, he'll do it again.
'He thinks he's gotten away with it. I just want her family to know that nothing will happen if people don't come forward and talk.
'It's a very dangerous place to go and life, I feel horrible for them because I know what they're going through.
'I just hope they get him this time. I want to tell her parents that I'm sorry and I wish I'd done a better job to get him put away. I failed but maybe they won't.'
Cail's family said they have been left 'devastated' and 'shook to the core' by her death, as friends posted several cryptic messages about the tragic swimmer's passing

Detectives were informed of the dead-on-arrival case, with an autopsy being performed to determine her cause of death.
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Bureau are probing the death, though a spokesman for the VIPD did not respond to further questions from DailyMail.com.
